MISSION STATEMENT

Derailleur Press publishes work that doesn't just get your gears turning—but shifts them entirely. Our poetry, fiction, and nonfiction chapbooks are handmade, because we believe inspirational work deserves a personal touch.

THE TEAM

Cassandra Baim
Co-founder and Fiction Editor

Cassandra Baim, our fiction editor, was born in Chicago, Illinois where she grew up with a book in one hand and a pen in the other. She earned a degree in English and writing in upstate New York, then took her talents to New York City to pursue fiction writing and publishing. Instead she found herself working as a barista, personal stylist, bookseller, book reviewer, and agent’s assistant. You can find her words in PANK Magazine, Queen Mob’s Tea House, Electric Literature, and The JAB. When not reading or writing, she enjoys riding her bicycle, sewing, crossword puzzles, cooking, political activism, and teaching her cat to fetch. She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Kate Hatcher
Co-founder and Nonfiction Editor

Kate, our nonfiction editor, has been a lover of stories since she was a child growing up in Mississippi. Never as much a writer as a reader, she decided to pursue a career in publishing while she was working on her BA in English at Ole Miss. She packed up and moved to London, where she earned an MA in Publishing at Kingston University and incorrectly thought this would be her easy way into the industry.

The following years were full of unpaid internships, underpaid freelancing, and not a small amount of heartache before she wised up and moved to New York where she now works in production at an independent press in Midtown Manhattan and co-started a press with two other strong women. She lives in Brooklyn with the plants she's somehow managed to keep alive.

Category is, what books do you keep going back to? Poetry Pick: “Collected Lyrics” by Edna St. Vincent Millay Jo says: I’ve had this exact printing of this collection for seven years now. I got it at some random used book store in my home town for a dollar, and I’ve reread it so much the pages are falling out. Even though the most recent of Edna’s work dates back to 1950, every poem still feels modern to me. I don’t know, you judge for yourself, but I can’t stop going back to this collection. . . . . #litmag #litlove #litpress #literary #litjournal #poetry #nonfiction #fiction #shortstory #handmade #chapbook #writing #bookart #books #bookish #derailleur #derailleurpress #indiepress #bookrec #bookrecomendations #readingisfundamental #readingisfun #onwednesdayswerecbooks #novel #writersofinstagram #readersofinstagram

Category is, what books do you keep going back to? Nonfiction Pick: “Closer” by Sarah Barmak Closer is required reading for anyone who has or spends any time with a vagina. It’s honestly astounding (and pretty sad) how little we still understand about female pleasure, and Sarah Barmak goes right to the edge of our collective knowledge to better learn how to fill in the gaps. We can all stand to learn a thing or two from Closer. . . . . #litmag #litlove #litpress #literary #litjournal #poetry #nonfiction #fiction #shortstory #handmade #chapbook #writing #bookart #books #bookish #derailleur #derailleurpress #indiepress #bookrec #bookrecomendations #readingisfundamental #readingisfun #onwednesdayswerecbooks #novel #writersofinstagram #readersofinstagram

Category is, what books do you keep going back to? Fiction Pick: “The Lesser Bohemians” by Eimear McBride Cassandra says: This novel is a Joyce-ian love story between an eighteen-year-old acting student and a professional actor more than twice her age, a man who experienced violent abuse at the hands of his mother, but beneath the doomed love is a story of redemption and forgiveness.I love the frenetic language, the brutally honest commentary on sexuality and trauma, and the unconventional love story. It’s an amazing book. . . . . #litmag #litlove #litpress #literary #litjournal #poetry #nonfiction #fiction #shortstory #handmade #chapbook #writing #bookart #books #bookish #derailleur #derailleurpress #indiepress #bookrec #bookrecomendations #readingisfundamental #readingisfun #onwednesdayswerecbooks #novel #writersofinstagram #readersofinstagram
